Eye Surgery

The New Hope Hospital has a well-equipped eye testing centre with a trained team specialising in eye-related diagnostics. The New Hope Field Team goes door-to-door in remote tribal villages to detect and screen for refractive errors, cataracts, pterygium, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma in the early stages and provides treatment to prevent permanent blindness.

The New Hope Field Team prepares each patient for surgery, including transport to a private hospital and companionship while they are there. After the surgery, New Hope transports patients back to the New Hope Hospital for after care.

It costs AU$87 to fund one eye surgery for cataract and pterygium from identification of need, through to after care. Donations for part or fully funded surgeries are welcome.

Love Bundles

Love Bundles are a care package that includes self-care products such as a comb, custom leprosy sandals, bath towel, soap, coconut oil and scented powder.

New Hope India currently provides an alternative Love Bundle to eye surgery patients that includes rice, onions, potatoes, dahl, oil, salt and soap.  The provision of food allows them to take the required 15 days off work to recover from the surgery.

It costs AU$25 to create one Love Bundle.

As we enter the second half of 2026, fundraising for Christmas Love Bundles start again.

Projects

Over many years through fundraising events and the generosity of donors, Friends of New Hope India - Australia has contributed funds towards many diverse projects.

Currently we are seeking funds for a Medical Recovery Centre, the Agricultural Project and chickens.

The Medical Recovery Centre will provide for our Namaste family who live with multiple disabilities. The Centre will provide allied health support to the residents and be linked to the Multipurpose Centre that supports Tribal Women.

About Us

Friends of New Hope India - Australia supports New Hope India’s vision of becoming sustainable through fundraising, donations and sponsorship. We are run entirely by volunteers, including Chairperson Beverley Selten, pictured left with Nandhini on a 2026 trip to India. All of the funds we raise go towards:

  • The care and education of children and students, many who have been with New Hope India since they were babies or small children. This program has been successful in raising young adults who go on to become nurses, engineers and other occupations.
  • Tribal and Village Health Care which includes a travelling Health Care Team supporting remote area residents with eye surgery, immunisation and healthcare through their lives.
  • Namaste House which supports young people and adults living with disabilities.
  • Projects including: a solar bore, whipper snippers, chicken structures, and irrigation supplies for watering plants and livestock to support New Hope's vision of sustainability for its Agricultural Project; Multipurpose Centre for people with disabilities and tribal women in Muniguda; and one off items such as sewing machines to start microbusinesses.

New Hope India is a non-government organisation registered and founded with the Government of India since 1985. New Hope India works with, and for, the poor and disadvantaged, prioritising women and children. New Hope provides a safe home, healthcare and education to some of the most remote and disenfranchised people in India, including those with disabilities, orphaned, HIV+, leprosy patients and those living in poverty in Muniguda, Odisha (formerly Orissa) and Kothavalsa Andhra Pradesh.
